Micah's 3rd Birthday

Micah is all about superheros right now, so deciding between a Batman or Superman cake was too much for him.  Thus, he got both.

I started out my cake by making the cake itself reflect the superhero colors.  Batman was Chocolate and Yellow cake layered, while Superman had Blue and Red swirled and sprinkled.  The outside was supposed to have the superhero symbol attached to the front made out of fondant.  The overall cake layers and the bottom level of both symbols went well, but my fondant was too runny to get the symbol fronts to come out right and keep their shape.  After multiple sad tries, I gave up and cut out my paper patterns and attached them to the cake. (Hey, it was late and I was tired!)

Micah loved it, but I think in the future I am going to have to work with my fondant more to get a recipe that will stand up to small, detail work.  It may also require me to purchase some specialty tools as I don't have the tiny points needed for sharp edges on the fondant.

Paige's 5th Birthday

Paige requested a rainbow cake with lots of candy for her birthday. I decided to re-use the Skittles rainbow idea from Allie's Care Bear cake, and add an array of rainbow candies set against a plain white background.  It took most of my time to find the correct color candies, as most have some other color arrangement than simply the rainbow.

The cake itself was a straight forward layer cake, so the trick was getting the rainbow angles right, and keeping the white cake, white.  The rainbows turned out a little off, but with a little frosting no one could tell (except me).  She loved it and did not want to share much of the candy with her siblings.  Fortunately, I had a little bit leftover they could have.

Allie's 7th Birthday

I must admit that this entry makes me a little sad.  For Allie's 7th birthday she wanted a Shopkins cake.  However, I was on vacation enjoying sunny California over her birthday and did not end up making a cake for her this year.  Brian and Allie baked a cake and Allie decorated it with her Shopkins toys.  In the end, she was perfectly happy with it, and I vowed to return in full force next year.

Cody's 9th Birthday

While I am always looking for excuses to try something new in the realm of cake decorating, it is really more of an excuse to let the creative juices flow in any way they can.  This year Cody asked for a Pokemon cake and I resorted to my standby favorite of using small toys to decorate with my theme.  This year I had a good selection of toys, but I needed to create pokeball's to go with them.  I was able to do this using gumball halves and some fondant.  They turned out far better than I expected and I must put this as one of my top creations thus far.  The rest of the cake was homemade fondant (which I think I am getting the hang of) and frosting piping to look like grass.

I have found a cake brand that is working well, I now need to focus on getting the edges straight and continuing to improve my ability to roll my fondant and get it smooth.  But, the flexibility of colors with homemade fondant is allowing me a wider variety of creative options.  Gotta love that!
